About The Project

The project, orchestrated under the banner of TUEWAS (Transport, Environment, Energy, and Water in Asia), was designed as a collaborative platform to foster regional professional exchange and cooperation among GIZ entities globally. With a focus on the Indian subcontinent, the initiative explored emerging applications of blockchain technology in disaster management to strengthen urban resilience against natural disasters. The GIZ India urban team engaged Urban Innovation Lab to undertake a pioneering baseline study examining the role of digital innovation—particularly blockchain—in disaster management. The study aimed to build a context-rich and strategically applicable knowledge base within the Sustainable Urban Development Smart Cities (SUD-SC II) initiative. SUD-SC II positioned emerging technologies such as Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as catalysts for building sustainable and resilient urban ecosystems. The initiative served as an innovation incubator where theoretical insights were translated into practical implementations across partner states including Kerala, Odisha, and Telangana. The project focused on analyzing operational processes activated during disaster events and developing practical use cases demonstrating the value of integrating Blockchain, AI, and Data Science into disaster operations management. By bridging theory and implementation, the initiative aspired to create a replicable model of disaster resilience for urban areas.

Research Methodology

  • Comprehensive literature review on blockchain applications in disaster risk reduction.
  • Assessment of global digital innovation trends in disaster management.
  • Contextual analysis for SUD-SC II partner cities (Kerala, Odisha, Telangana).
  • Identification of scalable and sustainable blockchain integration opportunities.
The Urban Innovation Lab functioned as the intellectual and operational nucleus of the project, assembling a multidisciplinary team to bridge research and real-world application. Their involvement ensured academic rigor while aligning strategies with on-ground urban disaster resilience needs.
